Thanks for taking the time to check out this album. It has been a conscious exercise in minimalism and in some cases, revisionism.
I have long wanted to strip back my music to the most basic core of solo acoustic guitar and voice. To document it in live performances with no overdubs.
In January 2015 I set up basic recording gear in the dining room of the house I grew up in at Papamoa Beach. The summer was hot, the beach was across the road, the birds were singing and the house was empty. I recorded ten songs in five hours and the aim was “imperfect perfection”.
Inspired by various “Songwriter Demos” and “Kitchen Table Sessions” from other artists, I wanted raw and intimate performances. Several of these songs date back eight or nine years and were written for vastly different musical settings than what you hear here. Jazz, Soul and Funk songs were stripped of their full band arrangements and harmonies, reimagined as solo singer/songwriter vehicles in different styles. Many of these songs have been performed live by myself and others but also there are several songs within which are either brand new or have never seen the light of day before now.
As an artist, stripping things back to no overdubs and removing much of the musical “embellishments” can be a difficult thing to do as often we wish to tinker with our creations and make them as splendid as possible. Here I have attempted to release myself from that, endeavouring to keep things as simple as possible while retaining the meaning and soul of each song.
All of these songs have some personal meaning to me and relate to times in my life from the last decade. As a songwriter I believe that you should wear your heart on your sleeve at times, so this collection is firmly in that tradition.
Writing, revisiting and recording these songs this summer has been a fun and also cathartic project. I hope you find something in them which you can relate to, enjoy this set for what it is and appreciate the artistic intent with which it came to be.
